Computing guide

Choose a laptop by what you actually do

Laptop value is not a race for the longest specification list. The right balance depends on your software, portability needs, screen preferences and how long you expect to keep it.

Start with the workload

Web, documents and video calls need a different balance from large spreadsheets, software development, 4K video editing or modern games. List the applications you use and check their current requirements.

  • Everyday work or study
  • Photo, audio or video creation
  • Gaming and target resolution
  • Specialist software or operating-system requirements

Set practical minimums

Memory affects multitasking, storage determines local headroom and the processor controls sustained responsiveness. Check whether memory or storage can be upgraded; many thin laptops solder one or both.

  • Memory capacity
  • Usable SSD storage
  • Ports and docking
  • Webcam and microphone

Treat the screen as a daily feature

Size, aspect ratio, brightness, resolution and colour performance affect every task. A portable 13–14 inch laptop and a larger desktop replacement solve different problems even with the same processor.

Compare battery claims consistently

Manufacturer tests use different workloads. Use like-for-like independent testing where available, then consider charger size, USB-C charging and whether the battery is serviceable.

Check the complete offer

Confirm keyboard layout, operating system edition, warranty, charger and whether a discounted configuration is an older generation. Compare the exact model code because retailer titles can group several variants.
